GB Railfreight have an exciting opportunity for an individual looking for a demanding role within our Operations department, as we look to recruit a Regional Manager to support the North Region.


Reporting to the Production Director, you will oversee the management of Operational staff within the dedicated region to ensure the delivery of a safe, reliable and efficient service for our customers.


You will have experience of planning operational activities to achieve optimum performance and through visible leadership drive employee engagement across the region.


You will be responsible for the depots in Doncaster, Liverpool, Port of Tyne and Skipton.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and improve performance to maximise efficiency in a safe and robust manner to ensure targets are met at a regional level and KPIs delivered for the Production Team.
  • Provide analysis on all operational activities and challenge processes to deliver improvements.
  • Ensure a high level of customer engagement is met, building positive relationships and ensuring customer needs are reached.
  • Implement strategies and measures to improve any under utilisation of staff to ensure resources are managed in the most efficient way.
  • Champion new initiatives to improve operational performance and reduce any inefficiencies, ensuring there are detailed business cases and implementation plans where required.
  • Work with key stakeholders across the business to ensure the region remains compliant with any assessments, briefings and training.
  • Ensure a consistent approach is applied to any procedures, standards and policies across the Region whilst also ensuring the approach is in line with the goals of the wider business.
  • In conjunction with the HR team lead any HR procedures including absence management, disciplinary issues in a fair and consistent way and within a reasonable time frame.
  • Develop talent within the Region and support any succession plans in place.
  • In conjunction with the HR team support the recruitment, induction and training of new and existing staff
  • Ensure levels of staff engagement are maintained across the business and there is management presence within the region to promote communication across operational roles.
  • Provide clear direction and leadership for the team, providing constructive feedback and coaching where necessary.
  • Deliver any adhoc projects as requested by the Production Director.


Personal Specification

  • Experience of leading an Operations team in a rail (or similar) environment
  • Comprehensive understanding of Railway Operations; including industry rules and regulations
  • Strong verbal communication, written and numeracy skills
  • Sound analytical skills with an eye for detail; good problem solving ability and a practical approach
  • Ability to build relationships and influence both internal and external stakeholders
  • Commercial awareness and experience of implementing cost saving initiatives
  • Conflict Management Experience
  • Works well under pressure and is able to prioritise conflicting demands in a fast-paced environment
  • Comfortable working under their own initiative to solve complex problems.

Operational Experience

  • Train Operations Liaison Officer (TOLO)
  • Personal track Safety Certificate is essential
  • Accident/Incident Investigation and Report Writing
  • Comprehensive understanding of Operations, in particular GBRf Operational and safety standards would be desirable
  • Human Factors Training
  • Safety Management Qualification (IOSH or equivalent) to include training on undertaking Formal Assessor and Verification Qualification (A1/L12, V1 Verifier, D32/33)

Other Requirements

  • The candidate must maintain a strong presence across the region therefore must have a flexible attitude to travel and be available to work at a number of locations across the full region. They will also be required to participate in the on-call roster.
