Do you have Standards Management experience with a flair for articulating yourself both verbally and via written communication? Do you have an interest in writing railway standards and enjoy seeing things through to ensure operational staff are aware and trained in new or updated standards?


The Standards Manager is a new role and is key to supporting the busines to eliminate risk and ensuring that GBRf maintain operational compliance in line with internal, group, H&S, Railway and business standards.


You will work closely and support the Head of Standards with ownership, production, updating and continuous improvement to GBRf standards, deputizing at internal stakeholder meetings.


You will engage with the Business Implementation Team to ensure that upcoming and new traffic is compliant with standards and industry best practice, attending regular meetings where applicable.


You will liaise with the Head of Resourcing and Training Manager, to identify the operational training requirements of the business and ensure all elements of governance are in place.


  • Responsible for creating and adapting railway standards to meet existing and future business commercial need
  • Work with the relevant business departments to ensure that supporting documentation to operational activities is relevant, accurate and current.
  • Produce reports encompassing the scope of the standards team
  • Continue to develop the cycle of continuous improvement within the remit of the standards team
  • Remain up to date with industry change through consultation meetings and a close working relationship with the governing bodies of the rail industry
  • Through a close working relationship with the Lead Investigator, implement standards change generated from learnings derived from safety recommendations.
  • Attend and represent GB Railfreight at industry meetings/event sharing information and lessons learnt using the appropriate methodologies.



  • GCSE English and Mathematics (or equivalent)
  • Standards Management experience
  • Rail Industry experience
  • Competence Management Systems
  • Safety Management Systems
  • Thorough understanding of industry safety rules
  • Ability to pass Railway medical
  • Time Management skills
  • Clean Safety Record
  • Ability to prepare and deliver presentations
  • Flexible attitude to working hours
  • High attention to detail



  • Auditing qualification
  • Institute of Safety and Health or NEBOSH
  • Train Operation Liaising Officer (TOLO)
  • A1/L12 or D132/33
  • Internal Verification
  • Personal Track Safety
  • Operational Management Experience
  • Experience of working to railway standards
  • Technical knowledge of train driving and ground staff operations
  • Diesel and electric traction knowledge
